H.E.R. has one of those voices that give you goosebumps so easily. The soulful tone and smooth vocals are so satisfying, which is why her performance on tiny desk is probably one of my favorites. She already has a stripped-down sound so she works perfectly for the setup of the tiny desk studio. Her playfulness with her band and background singers allows for some fun runs and ad-libs in between her songs as her amazingly talented background singers match her energy in harmony.
For some background, tiny desk is a series by NPR that invites artists to perform their songs and show off their talents. In H.E.R.'s case, this is her second time on the show as she had previously performed as a guest star on Daniel Caesar's tiny desk performance as well. Not only does she sing but she also plays guitar, piano, and drums. She is an avid guitarist playing acoustic, bass, and electric. Her talents are something that really sets a woman apart not only in the music industry but in R&B especially.
One of my favorite parts of her performance was her all-black attire with her sunglasses that she never once took off. Even with the head bobbing and hand movements she continued to keep those glasses on with a cool and collected look. I admire her dedication, whether it was on purpose or not, to her wardrobe matching the vibe of her music.
Feel free to watch more tiny desk performances here. I encourage you to focus on the artists' vocals in this stripped-down environment and really appreciate the work and talent it takes to sound as good as they do.
